Although Team Penske dominated Sunday’s “Great American Race” at Daytona International Speedway, all three Penske Fords were involved in major accidents late in the race, taking Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney out of contention.
Their last hope rested with Austin Cindric. Cindric qualified on the outside front row and won one of the duel races. On the last lap of the Daytona 500, Cindric found himself in first until he got together with Cole Custer and Denny Hamlin. Damaged cars littered the backstretch. For one driver, the seas parted like the red sea.
William Byron, last year’s Daytona 500 victor, somehow missed the last lap crash and went from ninth to first in the last half lap to conquer Daytona for the second year in succession! For “Willy B,” this is his 14th career win and his third total at Daytona. For his team, this is the tenth “Great American Race” victory for Team Hendrick.
Tyler Reddick finished second, followed by 7-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, pole-sitter Chase Briscoe, and Johnson’s teammate John Hunter Nemechek. Johnson has struggled in the new Gen 7 car, but Sunday night in Daytona, the 7-time Cup Series champion recorded a third place result, his best ever since retiring from full-time competition. The No. 40 of Justin Allgaier also collected a top. This was the first Cup Series start for Jr Motorsports, and not only did they make the main event by racing their way in during the duel race, they actually grabbed a top ten by finishing ninth.
